The Journal of Ferrari History

Cavallino is the journal of Ferrari history, covering Ferraris old and new for over 40 years. It's the most reliable, most trusted source of everything Ferrari. Ever since the first issue in 1978 Cavallino presents extensive stories and detailed information from knowledgeable experts and enthusiasts who share the passion for Ferrari. All Ferraris are unique, and each one has its own chassis serial number. This is how the Ferrari world keeps track of all the great cars. Cavallino is the only publication that prints the serial number for every Ferrari mentioned in our stories, articles, and race results.

The 12th Annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance was held under clear blue skies and wonderfully warm ambient temperatures at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Amelia Island, in the far northeast of Florida, attacking a diverse range of automobiles to the scenic golf course setting. The 2007 edition feature was the cars of endurance racing legend, and five times Le Mans winner, Derek Bell.

The town of Essen, Germany hosts an auto show appropriately title the Techno Classica Essen, and it has become one of the must-do events of the European vintage and classic car scene. It pulls in over 150,000 visitors over several days inside seventeen halls in their convention center, but its appeal is not simply old cars, but new ones as well, with many manufacturers taking part to show off their latest wares.

To celebrate the opening of their new Technical Training Center in Maranello, Ferrari invited selected journalists from Europe and the USA to attend a two day media seminar at the centre on February 21-22, 2007. The format was to provide the group with tutors to give introductory lessons in the same style as would be given to the technicians attending the various courses run at the center.

Lon thought to be a spoof, with its GTO nose on a Lusso chassis and body, s/n 4385 GT was marginalized for years, as one dedicated owner tried to put its past together and sort out its anomalies.
No one listened. But with a new owner, and with further word from the Ferrari Factory, this 250 GT turns out to be a Lusso Berlinetta Speciale Extraordinaire!

Although there is a physical resemblance, the Herrington Lusso Speciale and a 330 LM Berlinetta are two different animals. Ferrari introduced its four liter LM berlinetta to the world as a GT prototype on March 4, 1963 at a press conference at the Monza race track. The idea was to run the car in the FIA's unlimited prototype class for cars over three liters, and to fend off perceived threats from Carroll Shelby's Cobras and GM's Corvettes.

One of these iconic models has been restored, and in doing so, s/n 0716 TR revealed some interesting news about itself raced by that factory, raced in South America, converted to berlinetta (!) but brought back to itself today.

There is a story here, but we don't tell you much more than this. Joseph Conway send ut these photos of his 328 GTS next to an SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance plane, but by the time we got back to him for more information, he had moved and we could not find him. The images were taken at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, which is based in Edwards, California.

Jan Matthias is a well known designer, a photographer, and an artist who was born in Germany in 1946. He received his formal education in Germany and later in Southern California, where he graduated from the Art Center College in 1975. He then lived in Austria and France for seven years, working as chief designer for Porsche Design in Austria, responsible for product design and project acquisition in Europe and the united States.

The early Ferrari "street" cars often were fitted with a small cylindrical sleeve to cover the inner tube nipples. The bottom of the sleeves was cut or filed to match the profile of the wheel. These sleeves were held in place by a small knurled nut, along with the normal fluted or knurled cap. I have salvaged these pieces from my old series II PF Cabriolet when the Pirelli Cinturato tires were replaces in 1980.

It all began with a very normal investigation by one owner into his Ferrari's provenance. He hired a known researcher to ferret out all the past details of his car, and it was this researcher's dedication that uncovered some anomalies about the early history of 250 TR, s/n 0718 TR. In Joel Finn's seminal work on the 250 TR, the first entry for s/n 0718 TR was that it was an Ecurie Belge entry at Goodwood, Silverstone, and Le Mans.
